Another Edition of What's For (School) Lunch?

Most of these lunches belong to my 4 year old who attends preschool. One thing, among many, that I love about her school are the healthier snacks given daily and the fact that candy is not used as a reward. Between all of my kids, we've attended 5 different preschools or Mother's Day Out programs over the years, and this is the only one that doesn't dole out candy left and right and doesn't give cheese or animal crackers every single day. The snacks might be "strawberries and wheat crackers" one day - or "banana and 1/2 a bagel" another day. We are given a snack calendar a month in advance, and I can send an alternative any day I want.

For lunch, they have to bring: 2 servings of fruits or vegetables, a meat/meat alternative, a bread/grain, and a milk drink. Although she can bring non-dairy milk, I don't really love the milk requirement. I'd prefer water with a lot of her meals. And it's a real pain on some mornings when I have to dash to the store because I realize I'm out of milk. However, I like that it prevents the other kids from bringing junky drinks. I like the lunch requirements, in general, because it forces parents to think about what they're packing.

grapes, bell pepper slices, hummus, and New York Style Bagel Crisps

sourdough bread with hummus (When I pack these, I put the hummus sides facing one another, and she pulls them apart at lunch.), a Sweet & Sara strawberry marshmallow, applesauce (organic, unsweetened 365 brand) cup, pistachios, baby carrots

Kind of plain-looking day: applesauce (organic, unsweetened 365 brand) cup, tomato chunks, and a sandwich made with Rudi's Organic bread, mustard, lettuce, Tofurky slices, and a rice cheese slice

Brother's-All-Natural freeze dried strawberries & bananas, a cooked sweet potato coin with sprinkled cinnamon, raisins, Sun Butter & agave on tortilla, pistachios

Somebody asked: yes, her school is also "peanut-free," so she brings another seed or nut butter instead. Sometimes it is cashew, etc., but my kids do prefer sunflower seed butter because it tastes the most like peanut butter.

olives, steamed broccoli, a tortilla with Tofurky & Vegan Gourmet cheese & Vegenaise, pistachios, Amanda cultured almond yogurt (and the monkey is an ice pack)

Amy's Macaroni & Cheese with sprinkled hemp seeds, Brazil nuts, kiwi fruit, baby carrots, Zen Juice Gels

This was the first time I'd seen these gel cups at Whole Foods, and I love them over some of the other gel cups we've seen. Organic juice and no added sugar.

This is one of the boys' lunches for homeschool co-op, but they all took the same thing this day. Baked tater tots (365 brand organic), Sol Cuisine Organic Falafel, steamed broccoli, Annie's Organic Orchard Apple Fruits Bites, and ketchup & hummus for dipping

  2. Love these lunches! They really are so creative! It makes me realize how I should incorporate more raw fruits and veggies into my lunches. I get into the habit of just eating leftovers and feeling like everything has to be cooked.

  3. That's great that they really are health conscious and that you know in advance what the snacks will be. Love those toothpicks ;-)

  4. Wow, it amazes me that there are actually schools out there that are health conscious...that's awesome!

  5. Yay, these posts are awesome! You pack such amazing meals for them. I actually really like the requirements they place on the meals (I'm with you on the milk though, not a fan of milk (plant or not) to drink with a meal. Imagine how much healthier kids would be if school cafeterias planned meals with these guidelines. And you would teach better habits at a young age.

  6. Once again you amaze me! Thank you so much for posting these ideas! I love them all and I think Faith would eat just about everything you packed! Evan likes the school lunch too much. I am going to have to find me some Bento boxes. I love how organized it makes their lunch look of course!

  8. It's great that the school has some guidelines about lunches and that they give out healthy treats. That's the kind of school I'd want to send my kids to, if I had any.

The lunches all look so varied and full of yummy, fun, and healthy foods. We only ever had sandwiches...

  9. You are so clever about packing lunches. Even without the guidelines, I'm sure your lunches would be superior, but I can see how they might encourage other parents to provide healthier lunches. Do you have any idea how much of the food is eaten vs. thrown away?

  13. what a super cool post! I love seeing all these healthy lunches you've packed - and so much variety. When I was a little kid my mom always packed me super healthy lunches (which is great), but I remember being so jealous of kids who had little packaged treats. We never got anything like that. I love that you've found some fun and healthy little treats to include in their lunches. Little kid me would have been so stoked about that! :)

  15. To everyone: Thank you for your nice comments!

Michelle, I mean, it's not like they're serving kale chips or anything, but I'm so happy with the efforts they make, for sure. And they're accredited or whatever so they're following guidelines they have to follow with the whatever private preschool thing they follow. They don't serve lunch, so everyone brings a lunch from home.

Sarah, my kids really do like to drink milk. I never liked drinking it when I was a dairy milk drinker, and I don't now, either. Just in cereal in smoothies, etc.

Pam, I really love the sectioned Lunch Bots the most!

Andrea, do you mean how much my daughter throws away? I have trained my kids to NEVER throw away food. We spend too much money on food to waste it. She almost always finishes her lunch at school, but she'll occasionally have a few nuts or grapes or couple of bites of sandwich left, which she'll finish on the drive home from school.

blessedmama, I never have bare cupboards, that's for sure. But some days it's harder to pack a lunch than others.

vegan in brighton, thank you so much!!!

  16. Don't you find the requirements kinda controlling? If I was a parent, I would want to trust my own instinct/intelligence with regard to feeding my child and not have to follow guidelines of any kind. The lunches look awesome and tasty though!

  17. Sarah, I definitely understand what you're saying. I'm NOT a rule follower by nature. I hate it when I'm forced (or even when it's attempted) to do something with my kid. I guess I meant that I like it for other parents, which is completely judgmental of me. Having been a teacher, a sub, and just a parent observer, I know that kids get sent to school with a lot of junk. It's hard to get kids ready in the mornings, and I know how easy it must be to throw a Lunchable or bunch of packaged, processed food in a bag. I don't like it for the kid, and I don't like my kid seeing all of it. So that's what I like about the guidelines. It's not always easy to pack something, though, when I'm in a rush and suddenly realize I have to open a can of beans or something because we're out of nut butter or tofu or whatever. Or if I realize the only vegetable we have in the house is frozen or raw lettuce or something that has to be prepared.

  19. Incredibly imaginative. Do your kids ever give feedback on what they liked/didn't like/want in the future?

  20. It looks delicious. I didn't expect that the way that you organized your plate. It can make the difference visually and the first most important thing about food. It is visually speaking.
